Chronic Pain Management

A mind and body approach to healing chronic pain

Calm image for clients looking for help with chronic pain

The understanding and treatment of chronic pain is changing.

Pain is an alarm signal generated by the brain and felt in the body that can easily become fixed and persistent through no fault of your own. Medication and Surgery are often of limited benefit, but fortunately there is a new approach that understands the mind-body connection and empowers individuals to take back control of their health, learn how to reduce symptoms and turn off this alarm without the need for medication or invasive procedures.

Dr Jon Graham is an experienced and compassionate GP with a special interest in chronic pain and the knowledge and skills from additional training in psychotherapy and mind-body medicine and is able to offer a holistic assessment for individuals with chronic pain and treatment with Pain Reprocessing Therapy if required.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy is a new and effective, evidence-based talking therapy that's suitable for the majority of people with chronic non-cancer pain. You will learn about the mind-body connection and the important role of the brain and nervous system in creating and maintaining physical symptoms such as pain and fatigue. You will learn how to regulate your nervous system, identify any stress or emotions that might be contributing to your pain experience and feel empowered to take back control of your health and well-being.

Using a combination of the latest pain neuroscience education plus simple cognitive, behavioural and mindfulness techniques, it is possible to learn how to work with your nervous system in order to break free from the vicious cycle of chronic pain and distress. With the benefit of neuroplasticity, it is possible to retrain your brain to turn off the pain alarm, offering hope for recovery to all those who have previously been told that there is no cure for their chronic pain,  "you must learn to live with it" or even "it's all in your head".  Your pain is 100% real. This is not about learning to live with pain, this is about learning how to view your pain from a different and more helpful perspective and resolve it at its root cause.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy can be helpful for adults and adolescents with chronic pain due to the following conditions:

  • Chronic neck or back pain

  • Tension headaches or migraines

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Chronic abdominal pain

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Chronic facial pain

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

  • Painful bladder syndrome

  • Chronic primary pain of unknown cause

Individual face to face appointments are available in Chester with online appointments also available.

Dr Jon Graham is also an approved Programme Partner with the online Freedom from Chronic Pain recovery programme
